It is capable of emulsifying oily substances and dispersing solid particles. In materials science, the micelles formed by 1631 can serve as templates for the synthesis of mesoporous materials (e.g., MCM-41).

Hair Conditioners and Shampoos: Serving as the primary conditioning agent, it adsorbs onto negatively charged hair, delivering effects of smoothness, antistatic protection, and ease of combing.
Skin Cleansers: Used as a bactericide and emollient.
