Under ambient temperature and pressure, DMA897 is a colorless and transparent liquid with a characteristic amine - like odor. It is slightly soluble in water, but readily soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol and acetone. The tertiary amine group (-N(CH3)2) in its molecule endows it with weak basicity, enabling it to react with acids to form corresponding ammonium salts. It can react with alkylating agents including methyl chloride, benzyl chloride and dimethyl sulfate to produce various cationic quaternary ammonium salt surfactants. Reaction with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) yields amine oxides, a type of zwitterionic surfactant. Additionally, it can react with reagents such as sodium chloroacetate to generate betaine, a kind of amphoteric surfactant. The octyl (C8) carbon chain of DMA897 has a moderate length, which imparts excellent surface activity and permeability to downstream products.




Application

 

Surfactant SynthesisIt produces cationic surfactants such as octyltrimethylammonium chloride, which are used in water treatment, daily chemicals and oilfield sectors. It yields amphoteric surfactants like betaine, which are applied in shampoos and body washes due to their mildness and excellent foam-boosting performance. It also generates amine oxides including octyldimethylamine oxide, which act as foaming agents and foam stabilizers in daily chemical products.

Daily Chemical IndustryIts quaternary ammonium salt derivatives (e.g., benzyl quaternary ammonium salts) possess bactericidal activity. In personal care products, these derivatives can serve as conditioners, antistatic agents and thickeners in shampoos, hair conditioners and body washes.

Industrial ApplicationsIn the field of oilfield chemistry, they function as oilfield additives for enhanced oil recovery. In water treatment, the derived quaternary ammonium salts can be used as bactericidal algaecides and corrosion inhibitors. In the textile and plastics industries, they are employed as antistatic agents, softeners and emulsifiers.




Safety and Storage

 

From a safety perspective, DMA897 is irritating and corrosive to the skin and eyes, and contact may cause burns. Strict personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn during handling to avoid direct contact.

In case of skin or eyes contact, immediately rinse with plenty of water for at least 30 minutes and seek medical assistance.

Stored in a sealed container in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area, away from sources of ignition, heat, and oxidizing agents.Store separately from incompatible substances such as acids.
